Orthopedic is not a
regulated word.
Nobody has to prove anything to print it on a box. It goes on shredded filling, on egg-crate foam, on whatever is soft and cheap that week. So we are not going to ask you to trust the word. Here is what is inside this one, including the parts that are not impressive.
You are not buying a bed for the dog in front of you.
A large-breed puppy spends twelve to sixteen hours a day lying down, and he does it through the whole stretch while he is still growing. We are not going to promise you a health outcome. No bed can do that, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
What we will say is smaller and truer. You are choosing the surface he spends most of his life on, and most people choose it once. Buy for the eighteen-pound puppy and you buy again at six months, and again at a year.
The complaint owners actually leave is simpler than any of this: he could feel the floor through it within a month. That is the base layer giving out, not the comfortable one on top. It is the layer nobody photographs, and it is the one that decides whether the bed is still a bed next year.

Only one of them is the point.
Memory foam that takes his shape and spreads his weight, instead of pushing back at him. This is the layer your hand finds when you press down in a shop, and it is the layer every brand photographs. It is also the one that tells you least about whether the bed lasts.
Contouring memory foamLarge breeds sleep warm, and a thick bed can hold that heat against them. An open-cell gel layer lets it move away instead. We are not going to give you a number here, because we have not measured it — and neither has anyone else who quotes you one.
Open-cell gel infusedIf a dog can feel the floor through a bed after a month, it is this layer that failed, not the soft one on top. It is firmer than the rest and it does the actual carrying. On the Large and Extra Large it is twice as thick as on the small sizes, because a heavier dog needs more of it underneath him.

Everything on this page is either in our signed factory specification or it is not here at all. Where we do not have the paperwork in our hands yet, we say that instead of printing a logo.
Bolsters included, one zip, machine wash cold. This sounds small until you read the reviews: the most common complaint in this whole category is a bed that cannot be washed, because the bolsters are sewn into it. A bed you cannot wash is a bed you throw away.
Most brands blur these words. The outer fabric resists water. A separate liner ships in the box, and you fit it yourself between the cover and the foam to help keep spills off the foam. Neither one is a sealed waterproof barrier. We would rather you knew that now than discovered it at 2am.
The zip is the first thing to fail on a dog bed, and when it goes the cover is finished, which means the bed is finished. It is an unglamorous place to spend money and it is the reason the cover is still usable in year three.
